Healthier Communities Initiatives in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation blog

Take a look at this great article by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s blog NewPublicHealth on the Y’s Healthier Communities Initiatives! In this interview with Monica Vinluan of the YMCA, efforts and accomplishments of the Healthier Communities Initiatives throughout the United States are highlighted and the program as a whole explained.

Since the formation of Activate Asheville: Pioneering Healthier Communities in 2008, major progress has been made right in your own backyard! The school recess program started in winter of 2011 and has gotten off to a great start by getting into schools and teaching our youth about healthy living and the benefits of exercise. Once sidewalk is laid in Woodfin, the Walking School Bus will begin to provide a safer way for children and families to walk to school.

Construction on the McDowell County Greenway has begun and will soon provide the community with alternative transportation and healthy recreation options. PHC’s Complete Streets effort is well underway as we continue to educate the community about why Complete Streets are a necessary attribute to our community’s overall health. Additionally, the Shiloh community recently received a grant from the YMCA of the USA to continue the extraordinary momentum we have working towards health equity.

Thank you for your time and interest in support of healthier communities – we couldn’t do it without you!

Mission Statement: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
