Gardens are a healthy and educational activity for youth. Children interact with each other in a socially meaningful and physically productive way. To Eden it’s just fun. “It is just kind of fun to put all the things together and know that these are tomatoes and peppers and lettuce we will grow and eat,” said 10-year-old Eden Schlager who attends the afterschool program.
To the Y, it’s battling childhood obesity in Buncombe and McDowell counties at 19 afterschool sites. Along with learning about bok choy, sugar snap peas, and Swiss chard, 850 children are improving their cardio, strength, and flexibility in the Youth Fit For Life program…and yes, it’s fun.
