From the CEO
A basket of fresh vegetables for a family facing hard times. Warm words of encouragement from a caring afterschool mentor for a fourth grader struggling with her homework. The thrill of a child exploring the wilderness for the first time. Encouragement from peers and health coaches for a cancer survivor. The work of the YMCA of Western North Carolina takes many forms, but has one common thread: strengthening the foundations of community through programs that promote healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility.
In addition to the health and fitness resources for which the Y is well known, we offer programs and services that touch people of all ages at critical moments in their lives. We work closely with community partners to identify unmet needs and develop innovative methods to meet them. For example, our Healthy Living Mobile Kitchens and Market bring free, nutritious food to food deserts and provide nourishment to those living with food insecurity. YMCA Camp Watia, our overnight summer camp, was created to make camp accessible for area families for whom camp was too often out of reach. And our diabetes prevention and management programs give hope and practical, lifesaving tools to those who are living with type 2 diabetes or are prediabetic.
None of the crucial work the Y does would be possible without support from the communities we serve -- donors, volunteers, and corporate partners who invest their time and resources in our work.
We invite everyone to work with us to make Western North Carolina a place where all people can live to the fullest.
With warm regards,
Paul Vest, President and CEO
