YMCA expands mental health programs during Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the YMCA of Western North Carolina is strengthening its commitment to community well-being by expanding access to mental health education, resources, and support for people of all ages.
Rooted in its mission to support healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, the Y is offering a range of programs designed to increase mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and connect people with tools they need to thrive.
“Mental health is a vital part of overall well-being, and everyone deserves access to resources and support,” said Maria Suarez, community mental health program director at the YMCA of WNC. “At the Y, we are committed to creating welcoming spaces where people can learn, grow, and feel connected—not just in May, but year-round.”
Expanding Access Through Community-Focused Programs
The YMCA of WNC continues to invest in programs that meet people where they are and remove barriers to care:
- Reach & Rise® Mentoring Program: This group mentoring program supports young people navigating behavioral health challenges by pairing them with trained adult mentors. Reach & Rise helps participants build resilience, confidence and meaningful connections in a safe, supportive environment.
- EveryDay Strong: Practical, research-based training that equips caring adults with simple tools to support the mental health and well-being of young people ages 8-18.
- Mental Health First Aid Trainings (Youth, Teen and Adult): The YMCA offers evidence-based trainings that equip participants with the skills to identify, understand and respond to mental health or substance use challenges:
- Youth Mental Health First Aid – Designed for adults who support young people.
- Teen Mental Health First Aid – Empowering teens to support their peers.
- Adult Mental Health First Aid – Building awareness and response skills across the broader community, in partnership with Buncombe County.
These courses help participants recognize early signs, start supportive conversations and connect individuals to appropriate care. From May-September, Youth Mental Health First Aid and EveryDay Strong will also be available in Spanish.
A Community Approach to Mental Well-Being
The Y serves thousands of individuals and families across the region each year through programs focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. By integrating mental health resources into its offerings, the Y is helping ensure that more people—regardless of background or circumstance—have access to the support they need.
These efforts reflect the YMCA’s commitment to advancing equity by increasing access to resources, reducing barriers and creating opportunities for all people to reach their full potential.
