Few camps offer the variety of activities that you can find at Discovery Camp. Every year, new weekly themes are selected and activities and field trips are built around the theme of the week.

2025 Discovery Camp Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedure
Black Mountain Primary
301 E State St, Black Mountain, NC 28711
(Please DO NOT use the front entrance on E State Street.)

Drop-Off: 7:30–9:00 a.m.
- Take Northridge Way Avenue and turn right onto Charlotte Street.
- Turn right into the back entrance of the school.
- Drive up along the sidewalk at the front of the building into the car line.
- Stay in your car — a staff member will assist your camper.
*Late arrivals after 9:00 a.m. require prior approval from camp leadership. Campers without approval will not be admitted for the day.
Pick-Up: 3:30–5:30 p.m.
- Upon arrival, call or text the site phone: (828) 777-2089 with your name and who you are picking up. For example: "Bob Smith here to pick up Sally Smith."
- A program coordinator will bring your camper to your vehicle.

- Staff will walk your camper out and check them out.
- Photo ID required before release.

Licensed childcare for preschoolers in Buncombe County. Hours 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Closed June 19 and July 4 (no pro-rate). One $75 registration fee per family, if applicable. Owen District, located at Black Mountain Primary. 4- and 5-year-olds. Priority given to Head Start families (please indicate if you are Head Start in Additional Comments at the end of the registration)
*McDowell County Pre-K:
Licensed childcare for preschoolers in McDowell County. Hours 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Closed June 19 and July 4 (not pro-rated). One $75 registration fee per family, if applicable. $20 non-refundable deposit per week/per child to be charged after registration. Located at Glenwood Elementary, Ages 4-5.

Financial assistance is available for qualified applicants. Click here to apply.
- The amount of financial assistance that can be provided will be dependent on income and other factors. Please have financial documents ready before you apply.
- You must apply for DHHS vouchers with the Department of Social Services state subsidy program before you can qualify for financial assistance through the YMCA. Call the DSS at 828-250-5500.
Discovery Summer Day Camp is for rising first graders- age 12.
Age groups are broken into different ranges for different activities that are facilitated by our expert childcare staff.
There is also a Pre-K program in the Owen District.
Your child will be able to learn, play, and connect with other children their age while they enjoy exploring.
Discovery Camp starts on a different date every year depending on a variety of factors.
In 2025, Discovery Camp's start date will be June 16.
Daily schedules vary greatly, but a typical day looks like:

Parents typically provide lunch, but the Y can provide it if required. Ask the camp director if you would like lunches provided for your child at summer day camp.

Food from home guidelines
Your child should come to Discovery Camp with:
- Backpack
- Active clothes that are OK to get dirty
- Active sneakers
- Sunblock
- Brimmed hat
- Lunch and snacks
- Water bottle
- Any medications they will need through the day
- Allergy medicine, including an EpiPen if prescribed
If your child will need anything besides what is listed here, a YMCA staff member will let you know.
